Frequently asked questions
Whether or not you've commissioned illustration before, it's natural to have questions. I've answered some of the ones I'm asked most often below. If you can't find what you're looking for, feel free to get in touch.
Who do you work with?
I've worked with publishers, museums, tourism organisations, hospitality brands, creative agencies and businesses on all sorts of illustration projects. Those are just a few examples. If you think your project could benefit from custom illustration, I'd be happy to hear about it.
Tell me a little about your project. Then, to prepare a quote, it's helpful to know:
what the illustration is for
where it will be used
how long you'd like to use it for
when you'll need it
Don't worry if you don't have all the answers yet. It's quite normal for projects to take shape as they develop. If anything important is still unclear, I'll ask a few questions before preparing your quote.

What information do you need before preparing a quote?
Do you work with clients outside the UK?
Yes. I'm based in the UK and regularly work with clients internationally. Most projects are managed remotely, so location isn’t usually a barrier. Being in the UK provides useful overlap with both European and North American time zones. Where practical, I'll adjust my working hours to make meetings and feedback easy.
How does the process work?
Every project begins with a conversation about your goals, followed by a tailored quotation. Once we're happy with the scope and timeline, we'll formalise everything with a contract before moving into the creative stages, with opportunities for feedback throughout.
→ Read: Working Together Step by Step to see the whole process illustrated, with extra guidance for each stage.
How do you price illustration projects?
Every commission is priced individually. Rather than fixed packages, quotations are based on the scope of the artwork, the production involved, and how the finished illustration will be used.
→ Read: What's in a Licence? Your licence records exactly what you're commissioning. Those choices determine the price.
How does illustration licensing work?
Every commissioned illustration comes with a licence that records how you can use the artwork. I'll tailor the licence to your project, so you're only paying for the rights you actually need.
→ Read: Licensing: Choosing the Rights You Need for a simple guide to requesting the right licence terms for your project.
Do you sign confidentiality or NDA agreements?
Yes. If your project requires confidentiality, I'm happy to work under a non-disclosure agreement.
Yes. Whether you have comprehensive brand guidelines or simply an established visual style, I can create illustrations that feel like a natural part of your wider communications.
Can you work within our brand guidelines?
What if we don't have everything figured out yet?
How do we get started?
That's very common. Projects often begin with an idea rather than a finished brief. Just tell me what you've got so far: I'll untangle it, ask the right questions and work out what I need before preparing a quotation.
The easiest way is to send me a brief outline of your project using the contact form or by email. I'll come back to you with any questions, talk through the best approach and prepare a quotation if we're a good fit.
