Two Colour Liverpool City Map Illustration

Anna Simmons' bold Liverpool map illustration, showcasing selected landmarks in a two-tone red and green design

A few of my favourite spots made it into this map - like the Metropolitan Cathedral, P&D’s Café, Mei Mei restaurant, and the iconic waterfront.

Discovering Liverpool Through My Eyes

The challenge when mapping a much loved place, is that there can often be too much to say. Especially when it’s a place with legendary status like Liverpool. And when faced with an over abundance of choice, sometimes the only thing to do is… edit.

So, when I embarked on this self-initiated Liverpool city map instead of attempting to encapsulate everything about my fave city, I've created a map that highlights my own favourite spots… the places I visit time and time again. With just enough of the famous bits to make it unmistakably Liverpool.

The Art of Editing: Less is More

It seemed fitting to mirror this economy in my visual approach. So I choose to work in a bold, minimal style and make it a two colour Liverpool city map illustration. Using red (of course) and its complementary friend, Liver-Bird green. A two colour palette might sound restrictive, but mixing them can reveal a whole spectrum of subtle shades in between. Less can be more!

Strategic Simplicity for Impactful Branding

Because of their simplicity, I find that two colour illustrations are a great strategic choice for projects requiring a quick turnaround. Pre-selecting and limiting the colours speeds up the design process, allowing for quicker completion of projects with tight deadlines.

For me, working in a minimal style isn’t just about speed- it can also be about clarity. Stripping things back can be the right choice to let key elements shine, so the message comes through without extra visual layering.

It’s a different kind of impact: it can boost readability in a smaller space, and the contrast and simplicity help important details stand out, keeping function and style in balance.

Two Colour Illustration, a Vintage Touch

And last but not least!- two colour work evokes a classic, vintage aesthetic. It nostalgically reminds audiences of old printing methods and vintage packaging, connecting us emotionally with associations of time and place; important to me for this personal exploration.

Let's Create Together

In my work, including this Liverpool city map illustration, I strive to craft illustrations that are more than just visually appealing; they are narratives that convey information and communicate persuasively.
