In collaboration with Alcalde Magazine, I created a world map illustration for the opening spread of a feature on the University of Texas’s global fanbase; alumni who tune in from around the world to support their team, no matter the location or time zone.
Scenes that Can’t be Captured by Camera
How do you show a global community united by team spirit, especially when they’re scattered across time zones and continents? That’s where I come in! Illustration lets me bring together scattered details into one cohesive, imagined scene. And I can share, not just the concept, but the energy behind it.
Illustrated World Map of Texas!
I set out to create an illustrated world map that not only accurately placed Texas fans around the globe but also captured their loyalty and excitement.
The project was a chance to use my skill in making complex layouts feel carefree and approachable. Working with an oval projection map, I balanced precise annotation with a playful style that kept the overall spread spontaneous and lively.
Organised to be easy to read
To keep the map easy to navigate, I built a visual system: country names are brightly hand-lettered in playful, varied styles; cities are marked with simple dots and neat text; flag icons highlight alumni locations. I labelled the oceans in loose waves to create flow across the background layout.
Evoking Memories and Emotions
I used bright, lively colours to convey the tailgate-party energy of the Texas fans, incorporating the team colours to strengthen feelings of connection. Culturally inspired lettering adds a global identity, while a textured day-and-night sky background gives depth and a tactile richness.
Research-driven storytelling
I was inspired by a photo of flags running across a Texan sports field to weave that into the map’s lettering. I illustrated people partying in the background to capture the buzz and excitement of game day - with a tiny nod to celebrated Texan (and alumni) Matthew McConaughey in his orange suit.
With this map, I aimed to evoke positive memories and community spirit among University of Texas alumni around the world.
