Textile History Map Illustration of France
Illustrated map of France created for ‘Bon Voyage: A Journey Through French Textile History’. I gently shifted the geography to work the layout seamlessly across the page gutter, ensuring every detail remained visible while while supporting the feature’s telling of France’s textile story.
For Selvedge Magazine, I was commissioned to create a map illustrating the textile history of France for a feature exploring the legacy and evolution of French fabrics. Alongside the map, I created small spot illustrations to highlight motifs, details, and archival references that support and enrich the rest of the feature.
A series of supporting illustrations using a reduced palette drawn from the main map. Limiting the colours allows them to sit comfortably alongside the feature while remaining visually distinct.
The creative challenge was to visually weave together centuries of textile tradition and cultural references, while maintaining the magazine’s signature sense of tactile beauty and subtlety. The brief called for a piece that felt archival yet alive, evoking the fragility and richness of historic cloth.
In my approach, I drew inspiration from the archival fabric photography and fashion imagery featured in the issue. I chose a palette echoing the softened colours of vintage remnants, ensuring each hue felt considered and gentle rather than bold. The composition needed to bring together very different design moments: from the ornament of an upholstered eighteenth-century chair to the streamlined silhouette of Dior’s New Look, finding a visual language that could hold both within the same map.
Using restrained paint textures and allowing areas of light to show through the background, I created a surface that feels layered and slightly timeworn. This approach helped the map sit naturally among the magazine’s photography while still feeling lively and contemporary.
The final illustration blends eclectic historical references with tactile detail, capturing the richness of France’s textile heritage in a visually engaging, archival-inspired composition.
