Norwegian’s Alaska Destination Guide Illustration
Norwegian’s Alaska destination guide illustration: created as a souvenir-style travel map layered with stories, landmarks, and hidden gems.
The intention behind this brief was for something part travel information design and part keepsake illustration. The client, Norwegian Cruise Line, wanted their passengers to experience the joy of holding a piece of art and rather than a text-heavy schedule: the result, was a richly illustrated Alaska guide that doubled as a souvenir poster.
Balancing Fun and Function
One of the key aims of this project was ensuring that the map was as vibrant and fun as the voyage itself. The destination guide needed to be filled with eye-catching detail but balanced with breathing space; so that guests could take the visual information on board. I balanced a sense of realism - especially in the wildlife legend, with a loose, energetic collage style that kept the illustration feeling lively and characterful. My hand lettering also keeps things fun without losing function; expressive, but still easy to read at a glance. I enjoyed mixing bright greens and bold primary colours, layering in tactile, print-style textures to make the map feel energetic and inviting.
As usual, I got completely absorbed in the research; no two glaciers are the same, after all! That attention to detail helped me capture what made each destination unique
From Anchorage to Homer
Cityscape, fjord, and coastal details—this detail from Norwegian’s Alaska destination guide illustration captures the range of landscapes (and one confident moose).
The Versatility of Digital Collage
My digital collage approach allowed me to combine textures, forms, and colours to depict the abstract beauty of natural wonders, from the Northern Lights to snowy peaks and icy glaciers. The same approach playfully adapting to the contrasting man-made scenes and cultural symbols which were sprinkled throughout. This approach brought Alaska’s landscapes and heritage to life — creating an illustration that was both informative and worth taking home as a keepsake.
Tlingit Carving and Slow-Moving Ice
A contrast in forms: abstract glacial shapes and craggy rocks meet the bold forms of traditional carving.
